How to peel a RAW EGG?

How do you peel a raw egg?  Science project #2

Start by CAREFULLY placing a raw egg into a glass jar.  We happened to have brown and white eggs so we did one of each.

Cover the egg with vinegar. Plug your nose if you can't handle the smell!

Watch & wait...................
My boys thoughts:  Chase thinks the (white) egg will turn yellow. Tanner thinks the egg will grow. After seeing the egg start to fizz in the vinegar they decided that the shell will dissolve.

Within an hour the brown egg started to look like this:

We happened to be going away for the holiday weekend, so 4 days later this is what our eggs looked like.
Interestingly enough, the white egg and brown egg both reacted totally different.

The white eggs shell was completely gone. It had nearly doubled in size and felt like a bouncy ball. It even bounced a little in the bowl.
When we broke it open with a spoon, it was still very much in tact inside, although the yolk looked a little rubbery.

The brown egg shell was still there, although it had turned to mush around the egg. It had cracked in several areas and in one spot a part of the yolk was sticking out.

The yolk looked almost cooked a little and there was no membrane left. The shell is obviously still there.

Although it took a few days to do this, it was really fascinating!

We're back!

School's out and so I've been scouring the internet for fun science & home/school type ideas. Here is science project #1.  This one talked about  DENSITY. They weren't sure what would happen. They guessed that the combination of all our ingredients would make dish soap.  (??)

You need:
*A glass jar
*Honey
*Karo Syrup
*Dawn Dish soap
*Water
*Vegetable Oil
*Rubbing Alcohol
*Lamp Oil (we didn't use)

Pour equal amounts of each item into the glass jar. (We did 1/2 cup each). Poor slowly, making sure to not hit the sides of the jar. Go in order and watch what happens.
First the honey
 Then the Karo
 Then the dish soap
Then the water. You could only faintly tell the difference between our soap and water layers
Then Vegetable Oil
Then rubbing alcohol. Our rubbing alcohol seemed to blend with something else. It didn't sit on top like it was supposed to.

It was very cool to see how quickly everything separated.   Afterwards, we put a lid on, and gave it a good shake. Within minutes it had re-seperated, although the honey & karo mixed and the soap & water mixed.   I don't know that my kids understand density anymore than when we started, but they had fun!

'L' and a New Year

I vowed for 2011 to finish what I started in regards to preschool. We kicked off the year with a bang!

'L' is for Lion and 'l' is for lollipop:

Monday was Lions: We read a couple different books about Lions. "We're going on a Lion hunt" by Margery Cuyler and "Quiet!" Paul Bright were both really fun! I always try to get a non-fiction book too when we are talking about an animal, so we can see actual pictures. Lions are definitely one of our favorites!

Wednesday was Lollipops: I couldn't find any books about Lollipops, so I taught Tanner the Lollipop song, cheek pop and all. Then what better way to talk about lollipops then to make them??

First you get your molds ready:

Then you read the instructions:

Then you get your ingredients ready:

Then you stir (and stir and stir and stir and then finally leave it for mom to do because it's TOTALLY boring!)

Then you poor it into the molds and stare at them until they dry:

And then you enjoy:

Tues and Thurs we worked on numbers, I used the 'Winter Math' work sheets I found here.

Writing numbers is something we haven't worked on yet. I started with 1-3 on Tues (4-6 on Thurs). Then had him write 2011 a couple of times and we talked about what the New Year means.

We read the book:

"Shante Keys and the New Years Pea's" by Gail Piernas- Davenport, which talked about different cultures and their New Years traditions. Then we glued "black eyed peas" (or black beans, he didn't know the difference!) to an outline of 2011. We work on the date everyday and I think he's finally got it that it's now 2011 and not 2010.

'K'

K was all about Koala's and Kangaroo's

check out Totally Tots for book ideas to go along with them. We glued Kisses to a K, and then ate them. That was probably the best part!

We did more but again, I flaked out and can't remember

'J'

For the week of J we studied Jaguars and Jellyfish (you kindof have to use your imagination on the jellyfish!)
Do you know how to tell the difference between a Jaguar and a Leopard? We do now... a jaguar has circles with a dot in the middle. Check ours out. He's definately a jaguar!

check out Totally Tots for books to go along with these. We did other things but I got behind posting the pics and now I don't remember. Ooops!

Measuring

I did this during the week of 'I' because I was thinking 'inches' and 'inchworms'

I made 'worms' out of ric-rac, and glued eye's on.
I put them in a "Can of Worms" (a frosting tub).
They were 1in, 3in, and 6 in.

I made a chart and we measured how many 'humps' long things were.

I was going to then show how the worm related to a ruler, but the last thing we measured was a DVD that he decided he wanted to watch. That was my cue that we were done! I learned early on in this pre-school adventure that we do things according to Tanner's mood, other wise it's pointless. I don't know if he completely got the point, since we didn't finish, but he still had fun doing it.

I

This week we studied 'I'

We talked about Iguana's. We read the book "I wanna Iguana" it was cute but I don't think my little guy "got" it. It just seemed to be over his head! He still had fun coloring his iguana though.

We also talked about inchworms, and read the book "Bob & Otto" It's about a worm and a caterpillar who are best friends, it talked about some of the ways that worms help the earth, in a cute way.

We read a book about Igloo's that I actually found fascinating. Did you know that it can get upto 90 degree's in those things?!? Crazy. We made one out of sugar cubes. It was harder than it looked:{

And what 'I' week would be complete with out ice cream!? I cut out scoops and numbered them 1-10. I had him put them together, in order and then we celebrated with ICE CREAM!
